Google Doodle celebrates Bengali New Year

The people of Bangladesh are not the only ones celebrating the start of the Bengali New Year 1424.

Google too has gotten in on with the celebration of the biggest and most colorful festival that marks the beginning of the Bengali New Year.

With its new doodle, Google has outlaid its cover page with colorful traditional motifs including an owl and a tiger. The entire artwork draws similarities from the Mangal Shobhajatra as seen from far away.

A festival that has its roots deep in the culture of protest and dissent, as it began during the Pakistan times with such undaunted expression of Bengaliness, is itself threatened today as several organizations say the celebrations hurt religious sentiments.

Interestingly, the people in the doodle are seeing wearing masks, which the government of Bangladesh has prohibited this year.

The Mangal Shobhajatra is procession taken out on Pahela Baishakh each year by Bangladeshis from all walks of life symbolizing the pride of the people of Bangladesh in their living heritage as well as their strength and courage to fight sinister forces, and their vindication of truth and justice. The Google Doodle encapsulates all of that.

Google users today will be greeted by the colorful Pahela Boishakh doodle to mark this very special day whenever they visit a Google page
